The "!" command is provided to permit a command to be passed to the operating system for execution, after which control returns to RDINFO. This will not be available on all systems. The text following the "!" is not examined further; it is simply passed directly to the operating system command interpreter for execution. For example, on a Unix system, for which this command is trivial to implement, typing "!ls" will give a directory listing of the files in the current directory.
