The "<" command is a prefix for the "K" and "S" commands (*Note Keyword: K-command) (*Note Search: S-command) which sets the scan direction to BACKWARDS through the file. String matching is always carried out on a line by line basis from left to right. For example, you could type "<Sfoobar" to search toward the beginning of the current INFO file for the string "foobar". Once the search direction is set, it remains unchanged until reset by a "<" or ">" command.
