PostScript Type 1 fonts for Sun Solaris 2.x

Last update: [05-May-1998]

/usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/Type1:
UTBI____.pfa afm couri.pfa fonts.scale

UTI_____.pfa courb.pfa fonts.alias.opt prebuilt
UTRG____.pfa courbi.pfa fonts.dir

Sun Solaris 2.6 (released in late 1997) added these (duplicates of fonts one level below):

Helvetica-Oblique.pfa Times-Bold.pfa Times-Roman.pfa

The files in .pfa (PostScript Font - ASCII) format correspond to the fonts:

LucidaBright-Italic.pfa LucidaSans-Italic.pfa

Corresponding Adobe Font Metric (.afm) can be found in the directories /usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/F3/afm and /usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/afm.

The directory /usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/F3 contains fonts in Sun's proprietary .f3b (encrypted scalable OpenFont binary) format. The Sun Solaris makebdf utility can extract Adobe Font Metric file information from .f3b files, but I'm unaware of any software (outside of proprietary internal Sun Microsystems utilities) that can convert .f3b files to .pfa (PostScript Font - ASCII) format. The directory includes these fonts:

AvantGarde-Book.f3b Lucida-BrightDemiBold.f3b
AvantGarde-BookOblique.f3b Lucida-BrightDemiBoldItalic.f3b
AvantGarde-Demi.f3b Lucida-BrightItalic.f3b
AvantGarde-DemiOblique.f3b LucidaSans-Bold.f3b
Bembo-Bold.f3b LucidaSans-BoldItalic.f3b
Bembo-BoldItalic.f3b LucidaSans-Italic.f3b
Bembo-Italic.f3b LucidaSans.f3b

The directory /usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/prebuilt contains fonts in NeXT .bepf big-endian format. I do not know what, if any, software on Sun Solaris makes use of such fonts; there is no mention of this format in the Sun Solaris 2.3 on-line AnswerBook documentation, or anywhere in the Solaris 2.3 manual pages, or embedded in any of the executable programs in /usr/openwin/bin.

Sun Solaris 2.6 added the directory /usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType, with fonts in Apple/Microsoft TrueType format. Although this format is not directly usable by most current PostScript engines, that is likely to change in the future once PostScript 3 becomes widely available, and I expect that converters from TrueType to Type1 format will also be available [a software developer has promised me privately that such code would be released, but has not yet delivered]:
