Topics: Galois theory, commutative algebra around the basic theory of algebraic varieties
Texts: The basic reference is Basic Algebra I, II by Jacobson. I plan to use also Glaois Theory by J.-P. Escofier, another book of the same name by E. Artin, and Introduction to Commutative Algebra by Atiyah and MacDonald.
Grades: This will be based on two midterms (each accounting for 35% of the overall grade) and homework (30%).
Exams: There will be a two midterms, one towards the end of February and the second towards the end of April (date and time to be determined).
Homework: Problem sets will be assigned fortnightly and will be available on this web-page. The solutions should be typeset in TeX (work with AMSLatex) and the pdf file turned in. You may discuss the problems with others, but please write the solutions yourself. Homework 0 is for your edification only, and should not be submitted.Homework 0 pdf
