I'll explain what students are expected to do for the MSTAT project and how the process usually unfolds. This is also a good opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the MSTAT program, as well as meet other students and faculty members.

What I enjoy about economics is the broad spectrum across which it is practiced – from education, the environment, and healthcare to economic development, trade, and finance, economic models are used to understand and predict behavior. Statistics has the same breadth as economics since it is with stats that economists “do economics.” In this presentation I’ll highlight statistical models I’ve used in a variety of court cases such as the contamination of rivers (multinomial logit), price fixing of high fructose corn syrup (generalized least squares), and wage discrimination (maybe as simple as ordinary least squares). Along the way I’ll identify some best practices (past, present, and future) and entertain questions about the use of statistics in the field of economics where I have spent my career. The punchline of the presentation is that it has been statistics that has helped me survive the decades since my undergraduate work.

This presentation will give you an overview of the actuarial profession including the various practices areas that actuaries specialize in, the professional landscape for the actuarial profession, and details on what it means to be a consulting actuary. What you’ll get out of this session is an understanding of the actuarial profession, what it takes to succeed, and your next steps for pursuing a career as an actuary.

Many different avionics platforms use the chapter 10 data format when recording their onboard sensor information. Being able to analyze this data can help identify the health of these platforms and reveal low hanging fruit for future improvements.
